We are incredibly grateful to everyone that came out to our fundraiser at the Village Pourhouse on Monday, January 18th, helping us to raise a total of $1171 for ShelterBox USA!
Even if you couldn’t make the fundraiser, it is still not too late to contribute! We will continue accepting donations online indefinitely, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting ShelterBox USA when you click the “Donate” button below. I encourage you to read more about the organization by visiting www.shelterboxusa.org, but here is an example of how your donation can make a difference:
$50: Would almost buy the cookware and tools that go into a ShelterBox, which ultimately can provide basic survival essentials for ten people after a natural disaster.
$100: Would just about cover the blankets, water-purification tablets, and water containers for one box.
$500: Would cover the empty container, a family tent, and the cost of transporting the box, depending on the location of the disaster.
$50,000: Would allow Shelterbox to supply about 50 complete boxes, the difference between life and death to 500 people in a disaster like Southeast Asia’s 2004 tsunami.

]]>There are members from two different Rotaract Clubs (one from Milwaulkee and the other from Italy) arriving in New York this weekend that would love to meet any and all of us from Rotaract Club at the UN. In order to give them a real NY Holiday experience while having a great time, we’ve decided to join them for ice skating this Sunday, December 20th, at Bryant Park (www.thepondatbryantpark.com) at 4:00pm. It’s free to skate and skate rentals are just $12. There’s also hot chocolate and lots of holiday shops for anyone who wants to come along but not skate. We’ll meet at the carousel on the south side of Bryant Park near the entrance to the rink at 4. Finally, thank you for the great turnout to our last meeting of 2009. We were inspired by the amazing work in first response disaster relief that Shelterbox (www.shelterox.org) is doing all over the world and by Yi Shun Lai’s passion for the organization. ]]>We have been invited to join nycTies on the roof at the Empire Hotel (44 West 63rd Street) from 7pm-10pm tomorrow, Thursday, October 22nd, as they host an event to connect all of their partner organizations, including Rotaract Club at the UN! PLEASE NOTE that the regular meeting scheduled for next Thursday, November 5th has been replaced with a party to kick-off RI UN Day weekend. We’ll be at The Banshee, located very close to the Ronald McDonald House on 1st Ave between E 73rd & E 74th Street, where our very own members will be serving up drinks behind the bar to raise money for the Honduras Clean Air Initiative. No cover charge and drink specials until 8:30pm; the DJ goes on at 9:30pm. You’ll also have a chance to win CASH with a 50/50 raffle! We’ll resume our regular meetings at the Ronald McDonald House on Thursday, November 19th, with very special guest Boris Capo Perez; Third Secretary from Permanent Mission of the Republic of Cuba to the United Nations. He will speak about U.S. & Cuba relations and what the future holds for the two nations. Make sure to mark your calendars - you won’t want to miss out on this one!
Last, but certainly not least, we have two volunteer projects coming up in November: tutoring and ESL conversation practice with the students at International Community High School on Saturday, November 14th and the Fraternite Notre Dame Children’s birthday party on Saturday, November 21st. ]]>Our guest speaker this week is Claudia Maffettone, Youth Program Coordinator at the WFUNA office in New York. Ms. Maffettone will present on BluMail, a global email, education, networking, jobs, entrepreneurship and activism portal for millions who will be coming online in developing countries. Established as an alliance of NGO, private sector and United Nations organizations, BluMail seeks to be viewed as an alternative to Hotmail, Yahoo and other free email portals so that we may educate and inspire when users check their email through the BluPortal. (www.BluMail.org).

We will hold our annual fundraiser to benefit the CCNY Chapter of Engineers Without Borders from 5-7pm that night at World Bar, directly across the street from the UN. Ms. Maffettone is the Youth Program Coordinator at the WFUNA office in New York. She has a Bachelors degree in International Relations and Diplomacy. Claudia has been a member of MSOI, the Italian UNYA, for six years. She took part in several Italian Model UN Conferences, and represented MSOI at seminars and youth exchanges in the frame of the European Youth in Action Program. As a board member of MSOI, she organized projects and workshops at the national level with permanent missions, institutions and NGOs on topics related to the UN, international affairs, and multilateral cooperation. Claudia is a member of the Making Commitments Matter Initiative, and has been on the board of other international youth associations such as the YMCA and the Youth Synergy Network. As a Youth Program Coordinator at WFUNA, Claudia has been the liaison person with the UN Youth Associations around the world and the youth section of WFUNA, has promoted youth projects and initiatives at WFUNA and at the UN, and has represented WFUNA at the Commisson for Social Development. ]]>Our first guest speaker is Dr. Larry Parks, who will be presenting “Collapse of the Dollar, Monetary Malfeasance, Resurrection of Gold: Reasserting the Monetary Powers and Disabilities of the Constitution.”
Dr. Parks is the Executive Director of the Foundation of the Advancement of Monetary Education (FAME) and the host of The Larry Parks Show, aired weekly on Time Warner Channel #56 in Manhattan. He has broad experience in academia, in business, and in finance. He holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the Polytechnic University where for many years he was an adjunct professor teaching at the graduate level. His writings have appeared in Pensions & Investments, The Economist, The Washington Times, The Freeman, The Free Market, The United States Congressional Record, National Review, The Labor Studies Journal, The Houston Chronicle, and many popular publications. He is the Author of What Does Mr. Greenspan Really Think? He is an active member of many civic and social organizations, and is a frequent speaker on the fight for honest monetary weights and measures.
